How Often Should Dryer Vents Be Cleaned?

Quick Answer

Most homes need the dryer vent cleaned once a year. Cut that to every six months if you have a shedding pet, heavy laundry weeks, or a vent run longer than about 15 feet. The NFPA counted 13,820 home fires a year involving clothes dryers, and failure to clean was the leading cause at 33%.

How often should dryer vents be cleaned? For most houses the honest answer is once a year. The exception is the home where nobody has looked in eight years, and that one turns up on our schedule more often than you would guess.

Frequency is not really a calendar question. It comes down to how much lint your vent traps and how fast it gets there. Two houses on the same block can need very different schedules.

How often should dryer vents be cleaned in a normal home?

Clean a residential dryer vent every 12 months, or every 6 months if the dryer runs more than five loads a week. That covers the large majority of single-family homes in the north suburbs.

On the interval. A year is not a magic number. It is roughly the point at which a typical household has pushed enough lint into the duct to start costing real drying time.

Once a year is enough

  • One or two people in the house
  • Three or four loads a week
  • Short run, straight out a side wall
  • Rigid metal duct with no crushed sections
  • No shedding pets

Go every six months

  • Family of four or more
  • Six or more loads a week
  • Run over 15 feet, or two or more elbows
  • Vent that exits through the roof
  • A dog or cat that sheds

How often should dryer vents be cleaned in a condo or townhouse?

Condo and townhouse dryer vents usually need cleaning every six months, because the duct run is longer and often buried in the building structure. A single-family home vents through the nearest exterior wall, while an attached unit can push exhaust 25 or 30 feet through a chase before it reaches daylight.

On long runs. More distance means more elbows, and every elbow is a place where lint stops moving. It also means you cannot see the exit point, so the usual check on the outside flap is not available to you.

Association rules sometimes assign the vent to the building and sometimes to the unit owner. Worth checking before you book, because we have shown up at buildings where the work was already covered under the management contract.

Why does lint build up if I clean the trap every load?

The lint screen catches the coarse fibers and lets the fine ones through. Those fine fibers ride the airflow into the duct and settle wherever the air slows down, which means bends, low spots and any section that got crushed during installation.

On duct material. Foil flex hose is the worst offender because its ribbed inner wall gives lint something to grab. Rigid metal stays clear far longer, and it is what we install when a run has to be replaced.

In 18 years of pulling these vents apart around Glenview and the north suburbs, the worst blockage is almost never at the wall cap. It sits in the crushed section of flex hose behind the dryer, where somebody pushed the appliance back too hard against the wall.

Your dryer vent is a separate system from your HVAC ductwork. Cleaning one does nothing for the other, which is why air duct cleaning and dryer vent service are quoted as separate jobs.

Stop the dryer if you smell anything burning.

A hot or scorched smell during a cycle means heat is not leaving the duct. Unplug the dryer, pull it away from the wall, and do not run another load until the vent has been checked. This is the one dryer symptom that should not wait for a scheduled appointment.

Warning signs your dryer vent is already blocked

A blocked dryer vent gives itself away through drying time long before it becomes a fire risk.

  • Clothes still damp after a full cycle
  • The dryer or the laundry room running unusually hot
  • A musty or scorched smell during a load
  • Lint collecting around the outside vent hood
  • The exterior flap no longer opening when the dryer runs
  • No memory of the vent ever being cleaned

Two or more of these together means it is time to book professional dryer vent cleaning rather than wait for the annual date. Airflow problems compound quickly once lint starts catching on lint.

How long does professional dryer vent cleaning take?

A standard dryer vent cleaning takes 45 minutes to an hour for a typical side-wall run. Roof vents and long condo runs push that closer to 90 minutes, because the duct has to be worked from both ends.

On what the time buys. Most of it is the rotary brush moving through the duct in sections, not setup. If somebody quotes a 15 minute visit, they are vacuuming the opening behind the dryer and calling it a vent cleaning.

When can you skip a dryer vent cleaning?

If your dryer still finishes a normal load in one cycle and the outside flap snaps open with strong airflow, you can wait another season. Nothing on the calendar overrides what the machine is telling you.

On spending. A vent cleaned every six months in a two-person household is money spent on very little. We would rather say that on the phone than after the van is already in your driveway.

Top Air Solutions techs camera-check the run before quoting and will tell you to keep your money if the duct is clear. It is the same reason we publish a flat $399 price for whole-home duct cleaning, currently $299 with the $100-off promo, instead of a per-vent rate that grows on site.

Frequently asked questions

Can a clogged dryer vent cause a fire?

Yes. Lint is highly combustible, and when it packs a duct the dryer cannot exhaust its heat. The NFPA attributes 33% of home clothes dryer fires to failure to clean, which makes it the single leading cause, so a burning smell during a cycle means stop the dryer and get the vent checked.

Why does my dryer take two cycles?

Restricted airflow. Moist air cannot leave the drum fast enough, so clothes sit damp while the machine runs hot. A vent that once dried a load in 45 minutes and now needs 90 is telling you it is blocked, and this is the earliest symptom most homeowners notice.

Can I clean it myself?

Partly. A brush kit from the hardware store will clear the first few feet behind the dryer, which is where plenty of lint sits. What you cannot reach is a roof cap, a long run with elbows, or a crushed section inside the wall, and those need a rotary brush and a vacuum.

How much does professional cleaning cost?

Nationally most homeowners pay between $100 and $200 in 2026, with roof vents and long runs at the top of that range. Our price depends on the length of the run and where it exits, so we quote it on the phone. Ask any company what happens if the vent turns out to be clear.

Not sure whether your vent is due?

Family owned since 2008, and our techs will tell you straight when a vent does not need service.
